The Ashanti Regional Director of Special Duties for the NDC, Fuseini Donkor, has disclosed that members of his party were elated over the election of Wontumi as Chairman of the NPP in the region.
He says Bernard Antwi Boasiako, a.k.a. Wontumi, was someone they were aware they could outwit with ease to gain roots in the Ashanti region should he become Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti region.
For that reason, Donkor has disclosed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) aided his campaign and prayed for his victory to the advantage of the NDC in the 2024 elections.
The Ashanti region has remained a stronghold of the NPP for over three decades now, with the NDC having won just four out of the 37 constituencies in the region.
But in the 2024 elections, the NDC targeted 12 seats and won 8, with one still in contention.
Giving his post-election analysis on the region, Donkor, who formerly served as District Chief Executive in Sekyere Afram Plains stated that they were aware Wontumi would “score own goals” to aid their victory should he become Chair of the party, the reason they supported his bid and rejoiced in his victory.
He was speaking on Onua TV’s morning show, Maakye, Friday, January 10, 2025 when he made the remarks.
“We were all praying for Wontumi to win because we knew he would score own goals for us. So we campaigned for his victory and we were happy when he won,” he told JB, host of the show.
He also lauded the leadership of the party for the strategy they adopted in the region to increase their votes, singling out the Director of Elections and IT for the NDC, “Dr. Omane Boamah came to help and he didn’t come to order us around but asked how we all could approach it to get the best results.”
“Obuasi East we won and we won’t allow that seat to go. You could see the pink sheets have been altered by pen. We’ll go to court and get our seat back,” he added.
Fuseini further disclosed that residents of the region made comparison of what both parties have offered them over the years to influence their voting pattern, the reason the party gained a lot of votes in the region for the first time in Ghana’s electoral history.
He said the NDC government built for the Ashanti region, the “Kejetia Market, Atonsu market, Tafo market and also the Afari hospital, Sewua hospital and many road constructions in the region so the people were comparing developments of both parties to see how the region is benefiting.”
“We’ll ensure we finish Kejetia phase 2 and the Suame interchange which was not in any budget, slash some taxes and make business conducive for businessmen. That is all our people need,” he stated.
