Senior Governance Advisor at the African Parliamentary Network, Prof. David Abdulai has condemned the Minority in Ghana’s Parliament for staging a walkout and later organizing a sit-down demonstration at the Economic and Organised Crime (EOCO’s) headquarters on Thursday, May 29, 2025.

The Minority accused the investigative body of unfair treatment and political bias.

This was in solidarity with the Ashanti Regional Chairman of New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi who has been detained since May 27.

In an interview with Johnnie Hughes on 3FM Sunrise on May 30, the Senior Governance Advisor described the parliamentarians’ action as abandoning their core duties in favor of unnecessary partisan activism.

“The Minority caucus should focus on their work in Parliament. We need them there and not to be sitting on streets over the dentition of a suspect. That is not their public duty,” he said.

He called for a strong Minority capable of holding the government responsible.

“There are a lot of things to hold the current government accountable for. As a democracy, we will always need a Minority in government to bring the side which we will never see,” he said.

Meanwhile, a Private Legal Practitioner, Osman Alhassan said,  “the Minority demonstration was a complete waste of time, energy and resources.”

He questioned why the Minority and leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is not resorting to the courts over the continued detention of its Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Chairman Wontumi has been in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) following his arrest on allegations of fraud, money laundering, and involvement in organised crime, according to the Attorney General’s Department.

“It is quite surprising that the NPP have soon forgotten the way to the courts. Was it not some months ago when they were screaming at others to go to court? What has changed?” He questioned.

3FM Sunrise airs every Monday to Friday at 5:55 am to 10am with Johnnie Hughes, Helen Appiah-Appiah Ampofo and Noble Crosby Annan.
