Private legal practitioner, Martin Luther Kpebu, thinks President Akufo-Addo is the apogee of graft, considering his abysmal performance against the canker since assuming office.

The lawyer, having compared the President’s performance score on the corruption perceptions index for the last four years with the previous government’s, has concluded that the Mahama administration did better in dealing with the menace than the current leadership is doing.

Ghana has stagnated at 43 for the past four years in its score for the corruption perceptions index released by the Transparency International. The score, which is the highest in President Akufo-Addo’s administration, was the lowest John M ahama’s administration got during his four-year presidency.

The President, has hence, received criticisms for doing less to fight corruption, with many describing him as a “clearing agent” when it comes to issues of corruption and corruption related cases involving members in his administration.

Joining a group of Ghanaians to protest against the government’s intention of selling some four hotels belonging to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to the Minister of Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, the renowned lawyer indicated that they thought John Mahama was worse in dealing with corruption, the reason they voted him out to bring Akufo-Addo.

However, Mr. Kpebu noted that the President has proven to be an epitome of the canker with scandals upon scandal characterising his government every day.

“The reason people are very angry is that we thought JM (John Mahama) wasn’t good enough. That’s why in 2016, we voted out JM, thinking that Nana Akufo-Addo is a better person. But the records show that JM is actually better. You see the corruption perception index, we’ve been at 43 for 4 years, 4 consecutive years, at 43. Now, 43 was the lowest mark that the JM administration got. So for 4 years, Nana Akufo-Addo’s best fight against corruption is at 43, it’s plateaued. It can’t get better.

“And it’s likely 2024, it’s going to be worse. Because this year, it’s now every day, new standard. Right? So that is why we are very angry. Because we thought that he was our last hope, our junior Jesus that Nana Akufo-Addo would live above corruption. Not knowing that he’s really the epitome of corruption. Nana Akufo-Addo is the epitome of corruption. The apogee of corruption,” he told journalists Tuesday, June 18, 2024 during the “Hands off our Hotels” demonstration.
