Flag bearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has lamented how Ghanaians left the NDC Minority as the only voice that criticised the incessant borrowing of then Finance Minister, Kenneth Nana Yaw Ofori-Atta.

The former President says when Mr. Ofori-Atta was trekking the Eurobond market, the Minority cautioned him of the implications of his actions but was not heeded to, a call he believes many Ghanaians should have joined, including Associations like the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA).

He explains that his administration, despite going to the Eurobond market for US$3.5 billion was able to build so much infrastructure but same cannot be said of the Akufo-Adddo government that has borrowed US$13.5 billion from same market and got nothing to show for.

John Mahama, speaking during an engagement with members of GUTA and the NDC Monday, April 09, 2024, indicated that it was sad the NDC was left as a lone voice to do the talking when everyone else’s voice was needed.

“We must not only be interested in buying and selling and our trading. We must also be interested in what the Finance Minister is doing. We must be interested in looking at the budget that is being presented. And that’s why I expected that GUTA would have joined us from 2019 when we started raising the red flag.

“A Finance Minister went on a borrowing spree and in 6 years he borrowed US$13.5billion from the Eurobond market. Every year our Minority was saying it in Parliament that ‘you’re over borrowing, this thing will lead to crisis’ but we were the lone voices. Everybody else was quiet,” he lamented.
