The West Mamprusi Municipal Assembly has initiated formal proceedings against the Walewale GPRTU, summoning the Union to address its alleged non-compliance with the national sanitation exercise.
This action underscores the Assembly’s commitment to enforcing public health regulations and ensuring a clean and healthy environment for all residents.
The national sanitation exercise, a nationwide program designed to promote community involvement in maintaining sanitary conditions mandates regular clean-up activities, proper waste disposal and the elimination of environmental hazards. This initiative is crucial for preventing the spread of infectious diseases and improving the overall quality of life.
In 2025, President John Dramani Mahama declared every first Saturday of the month as National Sanitation Day, to be observed across the nation. He stated that sanitation standards would be used as a key indicator to assess the performance of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in maintaining their office.
Since its launch, the West Mamprusi Municipal Assembly has consistently engaged citizens within the municipality in these sanitation efforts. Despite widespread compliance, a segment of individuals has yet to fully adhere to the regulations and participate in the exercise.

According to the Municipal Environmental Health Officer Faustinus Anchamba, the Walewale GPRTU has repeatedly disregarded its obligations under the national sanitation exercise.
Despite multiple warnings and opportunities to rectify the situation, the Union has allegedly failed to meet the required standards of cleanliness and hygiene within its operational areas, such as lorry stations and transport terminals. He admitted that their failure to comply with the exercise as announced in radio stations is a sign of disrespect to the laws of the nation.

The summons issued by the Municipal Assembly requires the GPRTU to appear before a designated committee to explain its non-compliance and outline a plan of action for addressing the deficiencies.
The Union faces potential penalties, including fines, suspension of operations at specific terminals, and other legal sanctions if it fails to provide a satisfactory response.

Meanwhile, the Walewale GPRTU Chairman, who also holds the traditional title of Entertainment Chief of Walewale has acknowledged the Union’s lapse in compliance.
He admitted that the GPRTU had defaulted on its responsibilities regarding the national sanitation exercise and expressed a commitment to cooperate fully with the Municipal Assembly.

The Chairman stated that the GPRTU would immediately mobilize its members to undertake the necessary clean-up activities and address the identified deficiencies. He pleaded with the Assembly to exercise leniency, assuring them of the Union’s dedication to rectifying the situation and maintaining a clean and healthy environment in the future.
The Municipal environmental health officer, Faustinus Anchamba again, clarified that the assembly will not tolerate any disregard for public health regulations and that it is committed to holding all individuals and organizations accountable for their actions. The health and safety of the residents of Walewale are paramount, and the Assembly will take all necessary measures to protect them.
The Municipal Assembly is urging everyone to cooperate fully with the national sanitation exercise and to contribute to creating a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable community.
