A tragic incident has occurred at Chiene, a farming community in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai municipality of the Western North region, where a 19-year-old boy has drowned in an abandoned galamsey pit.

The deceased, identified as Herod Cobbina, reportedly lost his life after he joined some colleagues to engage in illegal mining activities at the site.

The incident has shocked the community, sparking calls for a full investigation.

Speaking to the media, father of the deceased, Nana Kwabena Nipa III, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of his son.

He recounted that he was on his farm when he received a distress call informing him of the tragedy. Upon rushing to the scene, he found his son’s lifeless body, which had already been retrieved from the pit.

Nana Nipa further revealed that he suspects foul play, given the unclear circumstances surrounding the incident.

He is therefore calling on the Bibiani police and relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation to uncover the truth behind his son’s demise and bring any potential perpetrators to justice.

The death of Herod Cobbina adds to the growing concerns about the dangers posed by abandoned galamsey pits in mining communities, where many lives — especially young people — continue to be at risk.
