When Bolgatanga Central lawmaker, Isaac Adongo, compared Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia to Harry Maguire of Manchester United in December 2022, Wayne Rooney, a former United forward and English International gave him a reply.
Meanwhile, Harry Maguire himself has responded to the MP after the latter revisited the issue in Parliament.
The MP had compared Maguire’s dip in form to the performance of Dr. Bawumia whom he said was scoring own goals and giving passes to opponents just as Maguire was doing then, at Manchester United and his national team, the Three Lions of England.
“Harry Maguire, he’s a defender. He was tackling everybody and throwing his body everywhere. He was seen as the best defender in the world. Manchester United went and bought him. He became the biggest threat at the centre of the Manchester United defence, tackling Manchester players and giving assists to opponents.
“Mr. Speaker, you remember in this country we also have an economic Maguire. We were clapping saying this man is the best in managing foreign terms. Mr. Speaker, when we gave this Maguire the opportunity to be at the centre of our defence, he became the source of our own goals. Our economic Maguire is taking control of the fundamentals of our economy and destroying all of them,” Mr. Adongo said in Parliament in December, 2022.
But in a response, Wayne Rooney disagreed with the MP.
“On social media this week I saw someone in the Ghanaian Parliament making fun of Harry Maguire. It was crazy, because Harry has been outstanding at this World Cup. I predicted he would do well – because he always does well for England and never lets Gareth Southgate down. He’s simply a very good defender with a strong mentality,” he told The Times.
Almost a year down the lane, Mr. Adongo has apologised to Harry Maguire for the comparison he made. He says the footballer has turned the corner whilst Ghana’s Economic Maguire is still wallowing in his worst performance.
“Mr. Speaker, you remember that last year, I was very quick to compare my big brother, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to Harry Maguire. Mr. Speaker, I’ll now apologise to Harry Maguire. Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah, you got very angry when I used your defender as an example.
“Today, Maguire has turned the corner, he is a transformational footballer. Harry Maguire is now scoring goals for Manchester United. Mr. Speaker, Harry Maguire is now a key player for Manchester United.
“As for our Maguire, he is now roaming at the IMF, with a cap in hand. As for our Maguire, the Economic Maguire now was able to get pensioners to leave their home to parade on the streets,” the MP said Tuesday, November 21, 2023, whilst debating on the 2024 Budget statement.
After the video was posted by Accra-based JoySports on X, formerly Twitter, the footballer responded that he has accepted the apology and expects to see the MP soon in Old Trafford.
