Attention has now been shifted from who becomes the flag bearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), after its November 4 presidential primary to who partners the candidate for the December 7, 2024, elections.

After electing Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia as flag bearer of the party, the NPP is set to discuss who becomes his running mate today, Wednesday, December 6, 2023.

The meeting comprises members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) and the National Council (NC) of the party.

The focus of the gathering will principally concentrate on party stalwarts whom the leadership believes can add up to the pluses of the NPP to win the upcoming elections.

Names including Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (Energy Minister), Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum (Education Minister), and Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu (Majority Leader) are leading on the table per OnuaOnline’s sources.

The NEC is expected to deliberate on these candidates and formally present its recommendation to the National Council for approval.

According to the constitution of the NPP, in a major election where the sitting president is not the candidate, a running mate is required to be selected 12 months prior to the polls.

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia who is the flag bearer for the party will chair the meeting following the absence of President Akufo-Addo who is out of the country.
