The Assembly Member for Sefwi Aboronhia in the Akontombra District of the Western North Region, Eric Okrah has alleged that activities of a mining firm are damaging the community’s roads.

According to Okrah, officials of the mining firm visited the area with heavy machinery and promised to reshape the roads. However, instead of delivering on that promise, the Assembly Member claims officials used the opportunity to engage in illegal mining (galamsey) activities along the roadside.

“There were no signboards or any official notice to show this was a government-approved project,” Okrah stated. “He only constructed roads in areas where he could benefit from gold, leaving the rest of the road in a terrible condition.”

He further explained that the poor state of the roads is now making life difficult for drivers and motorcycle riders, and has also affected the ability of health and service workers to reach the community.

“Our farmers are suffering. The roads are in such bad shape that transporting goods to and from the farms has become a serious problem,” Okrah added.

He is calling on the government to urgently intervene and take over road construction to help the people of Sefwi Aboronehia.

Some community members also voiced their frustration, confirming the Assembly Member’s claims said the actions of miners have left the roads worse than before and urged the authorities to hold him accountable.
