Residents of Atabatɔ Nkwanta and Atakona in the Bia East District of the Western North Region are appealing for urgent government intervention over the lack of potable drinking water in their communities.

The two communities, with a population of about 500, have no borehole or pipe-borne water system, forcing residents to depend on polluted groundwater for drinking and domestic use.

Residents say children as young as 10 years walk long distances to Suma near Atabatɔ to fetch water, exposing them to serious risks.

“This is the only water we use for cooking, washing and drinking, even though it becomes badly polluted during the rainy season,” a resident said.

The source of water

Speaking to 3news, residents called on the Member of Parliament for Bia East, Richard Acheampong, and the District Chief Executive, Francis Amankwah, to intervene urgently.

They warned that failure to address the water crisis could force them to boycott future elections in the district, with some threatening to transfer their votes to Nobem in the Dormaa West District of the Bono Region.
