A tragic accident at Bibiani in the Western North Region has claimed the life of a woman after an articulated truck transporting timber lost control and overturned.
The incident occurred on the Goaso–Bibiani main road near the Bibiani Old Town road diversion.
According to eyewitnesses, the truck, a Man Diesel with registration number AS 3047-17, was heading from Goaso to Kumasi, fully loaded with 4×4 and 4×2 wood.
While navigating a curve, the truck reportedly lost balance, causing the head of the vehicle to detach from the trailer. The trailer, carrying a heavy load of timber, overturned and fell on a bystander- a woman believed to be in her early 40s, killing her instantly.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as horrifying, with people rushing to rescue the woman, but it was too late.
“The truck was speeding, and as soon as it got to the curve, it split. The trailer landed exactly where the woman was standing. It was heartbreaking,” a resident told 3news’ correspondent.
Personnel from the Ghana Police Service and emergency response teams arrived at the scene shortly after the incident. The woman’s body was later conveyed to the Bibiani Government Hospital morgue as investigations into the crash commenced.
Residents of the area are calling on authorities to implement stricter safety measures on the stretch, which they say has become a hotspot for fatal accidents. They are demanding the installation of speed ramps and appropriate signage to alert drivers.
The driver of the truck is currently assisting police with investigations.
