The Kwesimintsim Zongo Youth for Development has launched an initiative aimed at demolishing all makeshift structures and ghettos believed to be sheltering criminals and individuals engaged in illegal drug use, particularly the smoking of marijuana, in the Kwesimintsim area.
Speaking on Connect FM’s Omanbapa Morning Show with host Nhyiraba Paa Kwesi Simpson on June 30, leaders of the Zongo youth group expressed worry over the deteriorating security situation in the community. According to them, the widespread use of marijuana and other illegal drugs among the youth is fueling a surge in criminal activity.
According to the group, several ghettos and unauthorized structures have been erected at strategic locations in the area, which are now being used as hideouts for criminals who continue to terrorize innocent residents.
They add that a total of nine ghettos have been identified in Kwesimintsim.
“Most streets in Kwesimintsim have become hotspots for serious criminal activities. Young people hide in these ghettos to commit various crimes. Weed smoking has become rampant and is done with impunity. These individuals fear no one, We’ve taken it upon ourselves to ensure that all these ghettos are demolished.
We have informed the Chief, the Police Commander, and the Assembly Members of our intentions, and they have given us the green light to proceed,” Baaba Issah, Secretary of the Zongo youth group added.
Mahmoud Abubakar, the group’s organizer, also confirmed that they have already notified those occupying the ghettos about the planned demolitions.
“We have spoken to the ghetto leaders, and they are aware of our intentions. Previously, weed smoking used to be far from residential communities, but now, in Kwesimintsim, it’s being done openly in the heart of our neighbourhoods. These individuals have no shame,” he stated.
He further lamented the rise in theft and insecurity in the area.
“Our goal is to restore the lost glory of Kwesimintsim. Thieves have taken over the community. People who rear animals are constantly targeted — a single person can steal an entire cow. Almost every street in Kwesimintsim is unsafe. These ghettos and the activities that go on there have made the place dangerous,” he indicated.
