Some young artistes at Ayigya Zongo in Kumasi have begun transforming the Tech Junction footbridge into a colourful display of creativity and patriotism through murals of Ghana’s current and former heads of state.

Armed with paint brushes, spray cans and buckets of colour, the group is steadily turning the once plain footbridge into a vibrant public artwork that has already started attracting attention from commuters and residents.

The murals feature portraits of Ghana’s current President, John Dramani Mahama, alongside former leaders carefully painted across sections of the bridge, with many passersby stopping to admire the artwork and take photographs.

According to the artistes, the initiative is aimed at beautifying the area while creating a platform to promote youth creativity and artistic talent.

Leading artiste, Bawaah, said the project is intended to inspire young people to use art positively to impact society.

“We want to use this project to show that young people have talent and can contribute to beautifying the community through art,” he said.

The artistes say the idea was inspired by recent beautification projects championed by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, particularly the painting and beautification of the Asokwa Interchange, which has become a major attraction in Kumasi.

“We saw what was done at the Asokwa Interchange and we felt we could also do something meaningful here at Tech Junction to brighten the area,” Bawaah added.

Some residents and commuters have praised the initiative, describing it as a creative way of promoting national identity and community development.

A passerby who stopped to observe the work commended the artistes for transforming the appearance of the footbridge.

“This is beautiful. Instead of leaving the place dull, they are using their talent to make the environment attractive and educate people about Ghana’s leaders,” Abdul Nasir Abdul Latif said.

Another passerby, Mohammed Nazif added that “I see this to be a laudable initiative because this also serves as a form of education to children passing here.”

The Municipal Chief Executive for Oforikrom, Anwel Sadat, has been impressed by the initiative and pledged to provide paint to support the group in beautifying the footbridge.

The group hopes the initiative will encourage greater investment in community art projects while giving young creatives opportunities to contribute meaningfully to society.
