The Zongo and Inner Cities Development Secretariat has begun a 10-day skills training for some selected youth in 7 districts and municipalities in the Ashanti region on carpentry, welding, and electricals.

The initiative is to equip the artisans with the requisite skills and provide them with modern start-up tools to gain a meaningful income.

Presidential coordinator of the Secretariat, Ben Abdallah Bandah indicated that “lack of skills in Zongo communities gives birth to unemployment. Unemployment also leads to unwanted problems among the youth.

“So, we agreed to assemble about 100 youth to try them on pilot basis and take them through the skills training, after which we will group them and give them some startup capital in the form of power tools to run their own businesses,” he said.

The training which is being held at the Kumasi Technical Institute will offer the trainees the opportunity to learn how to work smart with modern tools and achieve maximum results.

The Zongo and Inner Cities Development Secretariat is hopeful the intervention will reduce youth unemployment in beneficiary areas.

Bosch, Energy Commission, and the Registrar General’s Department are partnering with the Secretariat to provide the training for the artisans.
