Two people have been killed and 14 others, including a police officer, injured at Nchiraa in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region after the annual Yam Festival turned bloody.
The incident occurred on Saturday, October 3, 2026, when gunshots were fired following disturbances at the festival.
The Bono Regional Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah.
According to the police, the violence erupted at about 5:30 p.m. after the festival programme had ended, when the Nchiraahene, Nana Tabiri Yaw II, and his sub-chiefs were being escorted to the palace.
Preliminary investigations indicate that a gunshot was heard during the procession, triggering disturbances at the Four Junction in the community.
The injured were rushed to the Wenchi Methodist Hospital where they are receiving treatment, while the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the mortuary of the same hospital for preservation and autopsy.
The Command said calm has since been restored and patrols intensified to prevent further disturbances, with efforts underway to arrest those involved.
