Media General continues to make waves in the journalism world, as two of its top journalists—Portia Gabor and Emmanuel Samani—secured the first and second place honors at the 2023 Emerging Health Technologies (EHTs) Media Award of Excellence.

This prestigious award, organized by the Platform for Dialogue and Action on Health Technologies in Africa (Health Tech Platform) and the African Institute for Development Policy (AFIDEP), celebrates exceptional journalism that raises public awareness and understanding of emerging health technologies (EHTs) in Africa.

Portia Gabor won first place in the TV category for her groundbreaking story on the use of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) systems in neurosurgery at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital.

Her report showcased how these advanced technologies are being used to enhance surgical precision, providing new hope for patients with complex brain conditions. The story was praised for its in-depth reporting and its ability to demonstrate the real-world impact of cutting-edge technologies in healthcare.

Emmanuel Samani followed closely, taking home the runner-up prize for his feature, “Artificial Intelligence: Revolutionizing Healthcare in Ghana.”

His report delved into the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the country’s healthcare system, with a focus on improving diagnostic accuracy and patient care.

“I’m honored to win alongside my colleague, Emmanuel,” Gabor said. “Our stories reflect the power of journalism to bring attention to life-saving technologies that are changing healthcare in Ghana and across Africa.”

Samani echoed the sentiment, adding, “It’s exciting to see how technologies like AI, VR, and AR are being adopted locally to improve health outcomes. These stories are more than just reports—they’re about the future of healthcare in Africa.”

The success of the two journalists highlights Media General’s commitment to excellence in health and science reporting, contributing to shaping the conversation around emerging technologies and their role in transforming healthcare on the continent.
