Some traders at the Agona Swedru market belonging to the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) have chastised their Member of Parliament, Cynthia Mamle Morrison, for her decision to contest as independent in the upcoming elections.
The women say her decision will split votes between herself and the NPP candidate to give the NDC a chance.
At a press conference organised by the market women, they described the MP’s decision as selfish and mischievous.
The women strongly disagree with the MP’s move and have warned her to reconsider, threatening to take action if she does not back down.
“If someone hadn’t been changed, she wouldn’t have come. We want the leadership of the party to address this issue.
“There was a someone before we brought her. We voted for her the second time. Since it is not right for one person to enjoy a good life, they brought us Chris and we the market women have accepted him since he is an NPP. So what happened for our mother to be saying she is not bothered over Bawumia’s victory or defeat?” quizzed the women who spoke on behalf of the traders.
They also called on the leadership of the party to visit the constituency to address the issue in order not to lose the seat to the NDC.
“We want the leadership to come here. Bawumia you are now our flag bearer so if you don’t come and we lose this seat, we will not take it lightly with you,” said one of the women who spoke on behalf of the market women,” she added.
The comments follow the lawmaker’s decision to contest as independent some months after losing the constituency’s primary to one Chris Arthur.
During an interaction with some party faithful in her constituency, the legislator indicated that the interest of the constituency should be their priority and not who becomes President.
In a video which has since gone viral on social media, the former Minister told the constituents that she was going to contest to complete the work she has started.
In the video, she referred to the completion of a project she is undertaking in the community, at whose commissioning she would communicate her full intentions to the people.
She noted that some women in the community have already began campaigning for her and she was confident she is going to win the election to continue her works for the people.
“I will inform Nana to invite us all for me to relay what I have to you. When I got here some of the women followed me to the school and they told me they have already began their campaign. If God permits, I will contest as independent to complete what I have started,” she told the gathering in Fante.
She continued that “when we are about commissioning the building, I will invite the entire community here and provide an explanation to you all to advise me because in such instances, it is not about the NDC or NPP.”
