Cynthia Mamle Morrison, the Member of Parliament for Agona West, has said she is still a legislator on the ticket of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Her comments follow the confusion that has characterised her membership in Parliament as well as three others after filing to contest the December 2024 elections on other tickets different from what sent them to the current Parliament.
The Speaker on October 17, 2024, declared the four seats vacant which was challenged in court by the NPP MPs. The ruling of the Speaker made the NPP MPs who were majority then become minority, with the NDC minority becoming majority.
But the Supreme Court ruled to stay the declaration of the Speaker bringing a confusion over who occupies the majority caucus.
Speaking after the NPP caucus leader’s address in Parliament Thursday, Cynthia Morrison indicated that “I’m still a member of Parliament on the ticket of the NPP.”
Meanwhile, Afenyo-Markin is asking the Speaker to demonstrate statesmanship in the midst of the ongoing impasse in the House.
He has accused Alban Bagbin of doing the bidding of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Parliament.
He says the Speaker has proven Ghanaians wrong with the perception he could bring the house together.
Addressing the press Thursday, November 07, 2024, Afenyo-Markin said it was because some people in the NPP saw something good in him that they voted for him but not to come and do the bidding of the NDC.
“We the majority caucus call on Mr. Speaker one more time to demonstrate statesmanship. We want Mr. Speaker to know that although we were not happy on the day he was elected, some of our colleagues, perhaps, had seen something good in him.
“It wasn’t the NDC that put him there to do the bidding of the NDC. Perhaps, people felt that he could be someone who could bring us all together,” he stated.
He added that the Speaker’s actions are hurting democracy, adding that the Speaker is giving a hint of what would ensue should the NDC lose the upcoming election.
“There are things we cannot say into the camera but Mr. Speaker is hurting democracy. What Mr. Speaker is doing is to rehearse what the NDC will do in case should they lose power; to bring chaos, cause confusion,” he stated.
The presser by the NPP MPs followed a second adjournment of the House indefinitely by the Speaker when there was no business on the floor for discussion.
