The Western Region Command of the Ghana Police Service has arrested six suspects in connection with a shooting death at an illegal mining (galamsey) site in the Nzema East District.
The deceased, 45-year-old Angu Mensah, who served as the Abusuapanyin (family head) of Gwira Ampanise, was shot during a misunderstanding at the mining site on Sunday, May 26, at approximately 11:45 a.m.
According to the Police Command, a distress call was received at the Axim police station around 1:20 p.m., prompting officers from the local division and the Regional Police Intelligence Directorate to respond immediately.
Preliminary investigations revealed that a confrontation broke out between Mensah and some individuals at the site. During the altercation, a suspect identified as Alfred Sadick, also known as “Strong Man,” allegedly shot the victim in the chest.
The six individuals currently in police custody are: Hamza Abubakar, 36; Hamidu Seidu, 42; Francis Biewose, 26; Bai Yaozheng, 36; Liu Gang, 43; and Wen Xien Wen, 45.
The group includes three Ghanaians and three Chinese nationals. Authorities say they are assisting with investigations.
The body of Angu Mensah has been deposited at the Axim Government Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
Meanwhile, police have launched a manhunt for the primary suspect, Alfred Sadick, and are appealing to the public for information on his whereabouts.
Head of the Public Affairs Unit at the Western Region Command, Supt. Olivia E. Adiku, urged anyone with credible information to contact the Regional Police Command or the Axim Police station.
The command has assured the public that efforts to bring all perpetrators to justice are ongoing.
