Her dream of becoming a nurse would remain an unfulfilled one if she is unable to return to school.

6-year-old Yvonne has dropped out of school against her wish due to a congenital condition.

At her age, Yvonne should be in school just like any other child, but sadly, she is not.

She got kicked out due to the inconvenience she causes to her teacher and classmates with uncontrolled feces.

Yvonne is suffering from spina bifida, a condition that affects the spine at birth.

This has also led to fecal incontinence, a congenital condition that disrupt bowel control.

Her father is helpless and fears this may deny his child her right to education.

“My main worry is about her education. With her condition, if she is not educated, things will be very tough for her when she grows up.

“At least, being educated will make her independent and ensure she realise her dream of becoming a nurse,” the father has revealed.

Article 25(1) of the 1992 constitution of Ghana states “all persons shall have the right to equal educational opportunities and facilities and with a view to achieving the full realisation of that right”.

Also, the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child affirms that every child has a right to education. The purpose of education is to enable the child to develop to his or her fullest possible potential and to learn respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.

But little Yvonne is being denied this right due to her current condition.

The distressed father is seeking for public support to correct the abnormality of his child through surgery.

“It has not been easy looking after her as a single parent but I know God has a reason for giving me such a child.

“All the support I need is to ensure she gets back to the classroom without any stress,” the disturbed father cried out.

But until the corrective surgery is done, her hope of returning to school would take a long time or be a mirage.
