Dr. DaCosta Aboagye, CEO of the National Health Insurance Authority, has assured Ghanaians of the scheme’s sustainability despite the additional cost burden to it.
This follows the government’s allocation of GHC2million to subsidise the cost of dialysis treatment for needy patients across the country.
Dr. DaCosta Aboagye’s reassurance comes after the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Health Committee, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, expressed fear over the collapse of the Scheme due to the additional cost implications from the subsidy.
The Juaboso Member of Parliament had cautioned that there would be potential repercussions if further strains were imposed.
In response, Dr. Aboagye clarified the NHIA’s stance and strategy, indicating that GH¢2 million earmarked for dialysis treatment is to offset some cost for the needy patients for the next six months.
“We are not pushing anything to NHIS. So, in my earlier interview with you, I made it clear that parliament actually gave the national health insurance authority GH¢2 million to help the needy with dialysis services.
“As we wait for the actual cost of the whole dialysis on our NHIS scheme my statement is actually separate from what Mr Akando is saying,” he said on Accra-based Citi FM.
