Communications and Digitalisation Minister, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has disclosed her intentions of serving as running mate to the flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, if selected.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma West has said she is ever ready and prepared to serve diligently, should she be named to partner Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the 2024 presidential race.

As a minister and lawmaker, Madam Owusu-Ekuful says she will not lobby for the position as her focus now is to deliver on the mandate she has been assigned.

“This position is not something we lobby for. If women are running affairs, it’s not bad. I love working and doing every job assigned to me. I won’t go begging, but when I get the chance, I will do it and do it nicely,” she said on Accra-based Asempa Thursday, May 30, 2023.

She continued, “for now, I am a Minister and an MP and doing my job very well. If they mention my name to go and do another job, I will do it gladly, but for now, I have to concentrate on what I have been assigned to do.”

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is yet to name his running mate for the 2024 presidential election having failed to do so in December last year as required by the party’s constitution to name the candidate one clear year ahead of the polls.

He pleaded with the leadership of the party to grant him some more time to do more consultation on the person to be chosen for the partnership.

Rumours are rife that the candidacy is likely to emerge from the Ashanti Region, the party’s stronghold, with Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Energy Minister and Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum the Minister in charge of Education, being on the top list with some females including Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and other women also on the radar.
