The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Akwasi Agyeman, has called for a review of the Supreme Court ruling on the ban on celebrity alcoholic advertisements.
He says there should be further discussions or clarity on the apex court’s decision to ensure that there are some guidelines that benefit artistes.
“How do we say they cannot benefit? It needs further discussion. I think we should probably apply for a review [of the Supreme Court verdict],” Akwasi Agyeman told TV3.
His comment follows widespread reactions that have greeted the Supreme Court ruling which upheld the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) ban, one that industry players have opposed.
Speaking at the launch of the maiden West Africa Music and Arts Festival in Accra, Mr. Agyeman said he supports celebrities who advertise for alcoholic beverages because they need to live decent lives.
“I am for our celebrities also making money off their fame; off their popularity so that they can live decent live and when they grow, they wouldn’t have to fall on philanthropists,” he said.
He further added: “Even if the celebrities are not showing their faces, the music that are going to be used for these adverts – who is making them? Are they not talents?” he quizzed.
