The election of Nana Agyei Baffuor Awuah as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Manhyia South brings to an end, the ‘Prempeh dynasty’, in the constituency.
Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as Nana Poku (NAPO), the constituency’s lawmaker, has been selected as running mate to the flag bearer of the NPP, paving way for a primary to be conducted to select a new candidate.
Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh won the NPP’s primary for the Manhyia Constituency in 2007 and subsequently won the 2008 parliamentary election.
Although Manhyia was split into north and south, NAPO maintained the south, a seat he has held since 2012.
He took over from Ghana’s former Defence Minister, Dr. Kwame Addo Kufuor, holding the seat for the past 16 years.
Following his selection as Dr. Bawumia’s running mate, the party needed to find a replacement for him in the next election, warranting the Sunday, July 14, 2024 parliamentary primary in the constituency.
NAPO’s brother, Nana Owusu Afriyie Prempeh, contested with Agyei Baffuor and two others, to ensure the Prempeh dynasty continues.
However, the delegates voted for Nana Agyei Baffuor who happens to be the lawyer for NAPO.
He therefore replaces Dr. Opoku Prempeh after the exercise, to represent the constituency in December this year.
The fiercely contested election saw the legal practitioner winning with 376 votes and his closest contender, Nana Owusu Afriyie Prempeh, securing 141 votes.
Akwasi Coker Gyambibi had 2 votes whilst James Owusu Boakye got 7 votes
