An abandoned galamsey pit filled with water to the brim has swallowed two-and-a-half-year-old twins, a male and female, at Morkwa.

The incident, according to some residents, marks the eighth fatality caused by abandoned galamsey pits in the farming community near Twifo Praso in the Twifo Atti-Morkwa District of the Central Region.

Assembly member for the Morkwa Electoral Area, George Sam, who confirmed the incident explained that the mother of the twins was unwell and dozed off while the children were playing in the compound.

He said the mother searched through the entire area for her children when she woke up and realised they were not around.

She later discovered the lifeless bodies of her twins suspended in the abandoned galamsey pit near their house.

The bodies of the young twins have been deposited at the Twifo-Praso Government Hospital Morgue whilst police have commenced investigations.

Some residents of the area have called on authorities to ensure the abandoned pits are covered to reclaim the destroyed lands and also prevent further deaths through such instances.
