The Electoral Commission will shred ballot papers printed for Ahafo and Volta regions.

This was announced by Samuel Tettey, Deputy Commissioner in charge of Operations during an IPAC meeting on November 15.

The EC summoned the emergency IPAC meeting to discuss preparations towards the 2024 general elections.

It comes after the EC started nationwide distribution of ballot papers.

“While printing of ballots has gone on well, the challenge has been the serialisation. The Commission has therefore taken the decision to recall the ballot papers for Ahafo and Volta Regions,” Mr Tettey announced.

“Plans for recall and disposal will be shared with you soon. New printing houses, Bulk and Acts Commercials, have been assigned to reprint the ballot papers,” he told representatives of political parties present.

Mr Tettey assured that “Party agents and security personnel will be present at destruction of ballot papers. All parties present at the disposal will sign a certificate of destruction, copies of which will be given them.”

Commenting on the information provided by Mr Tettey, the Deputy Director of Elections and IT of the National Democratic Congress, Rashid Tanko Computer said, “We raised the issue about the Volta region ballot. We should have done that earlier.”

The EC began the nationwide distribution of parliamentary ballot papers with Greater Accra on November 14 with plans to extend to other regions in the coming days.

The Commission said it has implemented a secure storage protocol, with ballot papers stored under police protection in each regional headquarters until election day.
