Dr Mohamed Ibn Chambas, the African Union (AU) High Representative for Silencing the Guns and the Chairman of the AU High-Level Panel, has made a passionate appeal to all political actors and citizens to prioritize peace and unity over electoral competition.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on Election Day, December 7, Dr. Chambas emphasized that no political victory is worth the loss of human lives.
“No life is worth sacrificing for the victory of a political party” Dr. Chambas stated.
He underscored the importance of maintaining calm as Ghanaians head to the polls, urging voters, political leaders, and security personnel to uphold fairness, transparency, and the rule of law.
Dr. Chambas also reminded stakeholders of the significant progress Ghana has made in solidifying its democratic credentials, adding that incidents of violence could undermine the country’s hard-earned reputation as a beacon of democracy in Africa.
His remarks come at a crucial time, with heightened political tensions and concerns over potential electoral disputes.
Dr. Chambas encouraged citizens to channel grievances through legal and peaceful means, rather than resorting to violence.
The seasoned diplomat also commended Ghana’s Electoral Commission for its preparations and urged them to ensure that the electoral process is free, fair, and transparent.
Dr. Chambas concluded his remarks with a call to action for political parties to respect the electoral outcome and work together to advance national development.
Ghana goes to the polls today in what many have described as a critical election for the nation’s future.
As Dr. Chambas’ message resonates across the country, the hope remains that Ghanaians will once again demonstrate their commitment to peace and democracy.
