The Afigya Kwabre South Municipal assembly has suspended the operationalisation of a quarry fund meant to generate internal revenue to execute developmental projects in the area.
The reason for the action, according to the assembly, was due to a forceful illegal takeover of the revenue point by some thugs just after the December 7, 2024 elections.
However, some concerned assembly members, according to TV3’s Ibrahim Abubakar, say the move will impede development in the municipality and must be reversed.
Addressing the media, the group claims the decision was taken without consultation with elected assembly members, a move which they say is against their bylaws.
Evans Kusi Worae, Assembly Member for Buoho Electoral Area, speaking to the media indicated that their exclusion from the decision is something they take exception to.
“The sudden suspension of Quarry Fund revenue mobilisation without involving the Assembly members is another act of disregard for our collective governance responsibilities. Quarry fund is a crucial revenue stream for district development and it’s management should involve all stakeholders, especially the elected representatives,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the assembly members are making some demands from the municipal authorities including: “A detailed explanation for this decision; A review of process to ensure that revenue mobilisation is done fairly and efficiently and an immediate engagement with the Assembly members to determine the best way forward.”
