Former Black Stars goalkeeper George Owu has expressed empathies for the current crop of players over the spate of bad results in recent times.
The 2004 Olympian said he was plunged into a similar situation while with the senior national men’s team and feels sorry for the current players.
“It’s painful because players try to do their best to win matches,” he stated on Onua TV on Thursday, March 13 when he was interviewed on Agoro Fie.
“I don’t think players like [Thomas] Partey, [Mohammed] Kudus, Jordan [Ayew] come to Ghana to get beaten by another country.
“It is just that things are not going well and I believe they themselves and the management [are not happy].
“I have been there before and sometimes if someone is going through such challenges, you feel sorry for the person.”
He exonerated the players from blame, urging support for them.
Ghana had a poor 2024.
The 2010 World Cup quarter-finalists failed to win a game at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, failed to win a match in the qualifiers for AFCON 2025, placing bottom in a group that had Niger and Sudan as well as Angola.
The year 2024 marked the first in two decades that the team failed to make an AFCON.
Owu was confident that the current management team can do a good job in ensuring that the team makes it to the World Cup.
