The Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has bemoaned the poor maintenance culture exhibited at some health facilities across the country.

The Minister who was at the Korle- Bu Teaching Hospital on May 14 to inspect the Maternity and Surgical blocks following reports he had received, encouraged Management of the facility to make the environment safer.

The Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in recent times has been in the news for the wrong reasons regarding the deteriorating state of some facilities at the country’s major referral centre.

The Minister in the company of some officials inspected wards, washrooms, broken down elevators and the general surrounding of some sections of the hospital where he witnessed a number of disturbing gaps.

“Korle Bu Teaching Hospital is our premier referral centre. As we have all seen, it is not in the best of shape. So today I decided to pay a working visit here to have firsthand information. I have received a lot of reports from the public so I decided to come and see for myself and then let us see how to find a solution to the problem.

“I am happy that some of these issues have already been identified by the hospital management, and they are working on it. We have very poor maintenance culture. Some of these things have been abandoned for a very long time. We are all going to go back and see how we can do it. Largely they all agree with me on my concerns and luckily, we will restore the glory of Korle Bu. ” He said

The Minister was not too happy with what he saw during his tour and would want a proper maintenance culture.

Meanwhile, the Management of the Hospital has promised to hold an emergency meeting to address the Minister’s concerns as soon as possible.
