The Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has described as “gruesome and dastardly”, the killing of Mohammed Seidu Akugri, the Bongo District Director of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).
His comments follow reports of the shooting and killing of Mr. Akugri, where his body was subsequently set ablaze at Nangodi, a community near Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region.
Ayariga, who is also the Majority Leader in Parliament, in a statement issued Tuesday, May 20, 2025, expressed his condolences with the family of his “comrade” and urged the community to remain calm.
He called on law enforcement agencies to conduct investigations into the matter and bring the perpetrators to book.
He assured the residents of lasting peace following the commencement of mediation by the Asantehene, aimed at bringing lasting peace to the people of Bawku and its environs.
“I urge all to remain calm and let’s focus on the ongoing efforts of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to bring a lasting solution to the Bawku situation,” the statement read.
He praised the youth of Bawku for restraining themselves, as they have been committed to peace in recent times, assuring them that meaningful progress is being made toward restoring stability in the area.
