The path to finding lasting peace in Bawku has began at the Manhyia palace.
The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who is mediating the peace deal commenced meeting with the feuding parties on April 29.
Leadership of the Mamprusis and Kusaase attended Tuesday’s meeting.
Some natives of the troubled town have expressed optimism, mediation will yield the needed results.
Abanga Braimah, a native of Bawku and a Kusaasi says “We can’t be fighting to the end, we can’t be killing each to the end, it is misunderstanding between two brothers, Mamprusis and Kusaasis are one” he said.
Abdul Gafaru, who is a Mamprusi said “We have been striving for peace for the past five years and we believe, Asantehene will help us get that.”
On Thursday May 1, the two parties will have their final meeting with the Asantehene.
Heightened security and access to Manhyia were restricted, especially the path to the main auditorium.
Some natives of Bawku were hopeful that Asantehene’s mediation would yield the needed results.
This commencement of the peace process follows assurances from President John Mahama of the government’s continued support for the Asantehene’s lead role in seeking a lasting resolution and restoring calm to the troubled Bawku region.
In a statement issued on April 15, 2025, the Manhyia Palace officially announced that these crucial mediation sessions would be held in Kumasi, at the Asantehene’s palace until May 1, 2025. These talks are considered a pivotal step in the ongoing national efforts to bring an end to the disturbances in Bawku.
