Private Legal Practitioner, Martin Kpebu has said the conduct of the former Attorney-General, Godfred Dame in the Ambulance purchase trial is a clear exhibition of an “unethical” conduct.
During the Ambulance trial, Dame was heard in an audio recording which was later admitted into evidence in court, allegedly attempting to influence the testimony of Richard Jakpa, the third accused in the case.
A year on, a Ghanaian citizen, Daniel Kwame Ofosu-Appiah, has formally petitioned the General Legal Council (GLC), accusing former Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, of professional misconduct in relation to the said Ambulance trial of Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and others.
Speaking in an interview on TV3’s KeyPoints, May 24, 2025, Martin Kpebu explained that irrespective of the outcome of the investigations by the GLC, Godfred Dame has clearly breached the ethics of the profession.
According to Kpebu, Godfred Dame must be held accountable in the court of public opinion for embarrassing the law profession even before the GLC’s investigation commences.
He said in this case, Ghanaians cannot wait for a decision from the GLC to conclude that Godfred Dame had misconducted himself.
“As a society, we were very clear at the time that Godfred Dame has breached the ethics of the profession. It doesn’t even matter the outcome of the GLC’s investigation into the matter, the fact remains that as citizens we are heard what Dame said in the tape and it was unethical. GLC can say otherwise.
“This is not a case we can say we will wait for the GLC decision. We must hold him accountable in the court of public opinion before the GLC investigate because this matter had embarrassed us,” Kpebu sated.
In his petition, Mr. Ofosu-Appiah is requesting that the GLC’s Disciplinary Committee consider sanctions ranging from suspension to removal from the roll of lawyers, stating that the matter is of urgent public interest and vital to upholding trust in Ghana’s justice system.
