Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu is demanding clarity from the Office of the Special Prosecutor over how it handled the Ghanaian component of the corruption case linked to the controversial AKSA power plant transaction.
Speaking on the KeyPoints with Alfred Ocansey on August 15, his concerns follow the OSP’s claim that it assisted U.S. authorities in investigations that led to the conviction of former Tema Oil Refinery Managing Director Asante Berko.
Mr. Kpebu says that assistance does not explain what action Ghanaian authorities took against persons or institutions connected to the alleged wrongdoing in Ghana.
He is also questioning public trust in the OSP and wants greater oversight of any investigation into the transaction to assure Ghanaians that it will be impartial and independent.
“Once he was assisting, what did he do about the Ghanaian component?” Mr. Kpebu asked.
He is calling for the relevant information on the case to be made public, saying “Bring it out” so Ghanaians can understand what investigations were conducted and why the matter was not pursued more aggressively.
