Dr. Jonathan Asante Otchere, a lecturer at the University of Cape Coast, believes there are more questions to be answered regarding the temporary step down of NPP National Chairman, Stephen Ayesu Ntim.

He says the public deserves more clarity on why the party leadership insists on the Chairman’s inclusion in meetings despite his incapacitation.

The political analyst believes that although the NPP lost the December 2024 elections abysmally and may want to reorganise and come back stronger, the actions suggest that the party leadership may prioritise the interests of certain elements in the party over the Chairman’s health.

Speaking on Ghana Tonight on TV3 Monday, June 16, 2025, Dr. Otchere noted that “it appears they want to do anything that will inure to the benefit of the party or certain individuals within the party.”

“I do not want to know exactly what the intent to discuss, for which reason you want to bundle a party Chairman that is incapacitated.”

He suggests there’s more to the story than the family is letting on, given the party’s determination to have the incapacitated Chairman attend the meeting at all costs.

“And for what reason will the party still want to go ahead with that particular meeting, scheduled for tomorrow, June 17th for which reason they will want the Chairman to be there? It means there are more questions to be answered beyond what’s provided in these two letters from the extended and immediate family,” he stated.

Dr. Otchere’s comments stem from a temporary break by Mr. Ntim from his position, due to some health concerns he is currently battling.

The family, in a letter addressed to the Chairman of the party’s Council of Elders Monday, June 16, 2025, asked the NPP to grant Mr. Ntim a short leave of absence to exclude himself from all party activities.

His medical condition, which the family described as involving a “cognitive dissonance and mental incapacitation”, will endanger his health and infringe on his well-being and rights, should he be forced to partake in any party meetings.

The letter is signed by family members including Kingsley Oteng (the family head) and Adelaide Ntim (the MP for Nsuta/Kwaman Beposo).

Ntim’s family therefore, sets out its reason for preventing their relative from partaking in any political engagements, including a meeting which has been scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, June 17, 2025 which he was expected to chair.

“Common sense dictates that Steve, as a matter of urgency, be temporarily excused, not only from the rigours of active politics, but from intra-party activities – in order to make way for needed peace and solace and for concentration on the ongoing required medical treatment process,” the family’s letter contained in some parts.

Meanwhile, the NPP is yet to issue an official response to the family’s letter.
