The Member of Parliament for Bimbilla, Dominic Bingab Aduna Nitiwul, has stated that the visit by over 60 NPP Members of Parliament to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was to affirm their belief that he is the right person to lead the party in the 2028 elections.
He says the New Patriotic Party (NPP) legislators have declared their support for the former Vice President and 2024 flag bearer of the NPP, indicating their intention to retain him for the 2028 general elections.
Nitiwul indicated that the lawmakers had been having meetings and decided to invite Bawumia to their meeting on Thursday, June 19, 2025, to officially declare their support for his new bid.
“Yes, I was actually part of the MPs who have been holding regular meetings. I think two weeks ago, we held a meeting in Dr Bawumia’s office to give him our support, and today, we again invited him into our meeting to formally let him know that all these MPs that he sees—willingly, individually—have come to let him know that we believe he’s the person who can lead us to victory in 2028,” he said on Accra-based Joy FM Thursday, June 19, 2025.
The former Defence Minister expressed his expectation that their number would continue to increase, noting that it had already grown from 42 at their last meeting to 67 when they met Bawumia yesterday.
“The number keeps growing every time. I believe that in two weeks, when we meet again, the number will further increase,” he noted.
Meanwhile, Nitiwul dismissed the assertion that the MPs’ declaration of support for the former Vice President would give him an undue advantage among his competitors.
According to him, not all the NPP MPs support Bawumia, and he acknowledged that Bawumia would not get 100% support since some colleagues have either declared support for others or are contesting themselves.
“There are 28 MPs who were not part of the meeting—not because they don’t like the former Vice President—but because they support another person. We also accept that there are even MPs who, themselves, are running or have indicated that they will run.
“So obviously, Dr Bawumia cannot get 100% or even 95% because there are many more MPs who are running, and they have supporters. But we, as MPs, have come to say that we believe this is the best.
“We are not saying just because we are supporting him, he is going to win the elections. No. We are taking one step at a time,” he explained.
