Former Minister of Defence, Dominic Bingab Aduna Nitiwul, has stated that the support of the 67 NPP Members of Parliament for Dr. Bawumia’s 2028 flag bearer bid is no guarantee that the election is a done deal.
He believes there’s still much work to be done to ensure the former Vice President and 2024 flag bearer of the party is retained to lead them in 2028.
His comments follow the meeting between Dr. Bawumia and some NPP Members of Parliament, where they affirmed their belief that he is the right person to lead the party in the 2028 elections.
According to Nitiwul, they declared their support for Dr. Bawumia when they met him on Thursday, June 19, 2025, and expressed their intention to retain him for the 2028 general elections.
Speaking on Accra-based Joy FM same day, Nitiwul dismissed the assertion that the MPs’ declaration of support for the former Vice President would give him an undue advantage among his competitors.
He pointed out that not all the NPP MPs support Bawumia, acknowledging the fact that the former Vice President will not get 100% support since some colleagues have either declared support for others or are contesting themselves.
“There are 28 MPs who were not part of the meeting—not because they don’t like the former Vice President—but because they support another person. We also accept that there are even MPs who, themselves, are running or have indicated that they will run.
“So obviously, Dr Bawumia cannot get 100% or even 95% because there are many more MPs who are running, and they have supporters. But we, as MPs, have come to say that we believe this is the best.
He intimated, however, that the fact that they are in support of the bid doesn’t mean the race will be easy, but rather, emphasised the need to work hard to achieve the feat.
“We are not saying just because we are supporting him, he is going to win the elections. No. We are taking one step at a time,” he stated.
The Member of Parliament for Bimbilla explained that the MPs have earlier had a meeting and decided to invite Bawumia when they met on Thursday to officially declare their support for him, expressing optimism of a rise in their numbers in the coming days.
“Yes, I was actually part of the MPs who have been holding regular meetings. I think two weeks ago, we held a meeting in Dr Bawumia’s office to give him our support, and today, we again invited him into our meeting to formally let him know that all these MPs that he sees—willingly, individually—have come to let him know that we believe he’s the person who can lead us to victory in 2028.
“The number keeps growing every time. I believe that in two weeks, when we meet again, the number will further increase,” he noted.
