The Accra Regional Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a key suspect in connection with the gruesome death of Immigration Officer Stephen King Amoah, whose burnt body was discovered five days after he was reported missing.
The suspect, identified as Bright Aweh, was apprehended after police investigations linked him to the officer’s disappearance and eventual death.
A statement signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, revealed chilling details of the encounter leading to the tragedy.
According to the police, Aweh was the last person known to have communicated with Amoah before his disappearance on the night of Thursday, July 3. He had allegedly invited the officer to meet at a location in Ashongman Estate, promising to repay a financial debt. Prior to the meeting, Aweh reportedly sent WhatsApp images to Amoah showing large bundles of cash.
That meeting turned out to be the last time Amoah was seen alive.

Body Found Burnt
On Wednesday, July 9, the burnt body of a male was discovered in a gutter near the GBC Satellite area, opposite Comet Estate in Accra. Despite the severe burns, the body was identified as Amoah’s by family members at the Police Hospital morgue.
Investigators disclosed that during interrogation, Aweh admitted to handing over GHS500,000 to Amoah, allegedly for debt repayment and safekeeping. However, he failed to clearly explain the source of the money and provided conflicting accounts, raising suspicions about his role in the officer’s death.
Amoah’s family revealed that on the evening of his disappearance, he had informed his wife that he was meeting a friend who owed him GHS200,000. Hours later, his wife received a message from his phone claiming he had returned home safely with the money. Sensing something was wrong, she asked Amoah’s brother to check on him, only for them to find the house empty and his phone switched off.
Subsequent attempts to locate him were unsuccessful until the discovery of the body.

In a twist, Aweh allegedly admitted not only to repaying the GHS200,000 debt but also to giving an additional GHS300,000 to Amoah. He is currently in police custody as investigations continue.
The Ghana Police Service is appealing to the public for any information that may assist in the ongoing investigation. Members of the public are encouraged to contact the police via 18555, 192, or report to the nearest police station.
The family of the late Stephen Amoah has also urged Ghanaians to support the call for justice, while expressing hope for swift and transparent investigative action.
