Former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has promised to establish a welfare fund which will support members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in critical time of need in their service to the party.
Dr. Bawumia said this on Sunday, July 13, 2025, when he paid a commiserating visit to the Deputy National Youth Organiser of the NPP, Chris Lloyd, who is recuperating from a brutal assault during last Friday’s election rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency in the Greater Accra region.
Videos showed the NPP Organiser being beaten by a number of thugs alleged to be supporters of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Dr. Bawumia visited the recuperating NPP official at his residence to express his sympathies and support, as he recovers from the attacks.
The former Vice President also visited former Minister of Fisheries, Mavis Hawa Koomson, who was also assaulted at the elections by a group of men, also alleged to be supporters of the NDC.
Dr. Bawumia, while expressing his sympathies, also reiterated his call for the perpetrators to be brought to book, as well as assurances that the actions of the perpetrators will never be forgotten, if they are not punished by the law.
The 2024 flag bearer of the NPP also visited the Parliamentary Candidate for Ablekuma North, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, as well as the party’s polling agents who were attacked during Friday’s exercise.
The Electoral Commission (EC) conducted a rerun at 19 polling centres in Ablekuma North due to some irregularities that plagued the December 2024 general elections in the constituency.
Among the issues that marred the election were destruction of electoral materials, missing pink sheets, and a fire at the Kwashieman Cluster of Schools where some disputed polling station results were being kept.
During the July 11, 2025, rerun, violent incidents marred the election process with four separate attacks were reported, including one on a journalist by a police officer.
Also, there were isolated incidents of violence and assault leading to the temporary disruptions at some polling stations across the 19 centers. These incidents caused disruptions, though voting resumed shortly after police intervention.
The violence that characterised the exercise has been condemned by many, including political figures, CSOs, the National Peace Council, the clergy, amongst others.
The police are currently investigating the incidents and working to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
