Kofi Nyame, NPP Constituency Chairman for Akwatia, has denied allegations that Mavis Kumi, wife of the late Member of Parliament, will contest the party’s primary for the upcoming by-election.

He notes that several individuals within the party have expressed interest in contesting the primary to represent the party in the by-election, including himself.

However, he indicates that rumours circulating on social media about Mavis Kumi, wife of the late lawmaker, contesting in the upcoming polls are untrue.

Speaking on Onua TV’s Midday News, Nsem Titire on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, the Constituency Chairman revealed that he and some party executives, excluding Mrs. Kumi, have expressed interest in contesting the seat.

“It’s not true. Those flyers aren’t from her; someone else is behind them,” he stated. The comments follow social media flyers suggesting the late MP’s wife is contesting the party’s primary for the upcoming by-election.

This sparked debate on social media, with some questioning the party’s growing trend of having late MPs’ wives succeed them.

Examples cited include Lydia Seyram Alhassan, who succeeded her late husband in Ayawaso West Wuogon, and Ophelia Quansah Hayford, who took over after her husband’s tragic death in Mfantseman.

Concerns were raised about the potential risks to MPs if this trend continues. However, the constituency Chairman’s clarification has now put the debate to rest.
