The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has endorsed its constituency treasurer, Solomon Kwame Asumadu, as its parliamentary candidate for the upcoming Akwatia by-election.

According to the party, the decision follows extensive stakeholder consultations, during which proposals for holding a primary were overwhelmingly rejected in favour of consensus.

The Eastern Regional Chairman of the NPP, Jeff Konadu Addo addressed journalists in Parliament on July 28.

He stated that, “The National Council of the party set up a committee and we were tasked to find out who could be our candidate or whether we will do primaries or not. So, the team went to Akwatia in the constituency, had a lot of engagement with the grassroots, electoral area coordinators, polling station officers, chiefs, opinion leaders, and the majority of the people said that for primaries, we should take it out.

We shouldn’t conduct primaries in Akwatia. And that’s exactly what we followed.

Mr Addo added that, “We commissioned a search, people went into the constituency and gave them all the names that had expressed interest. In this case, Honorable Amase, Lawyer Wiredu, Kwame Asumadu, Daniel Nyame, Osei Appiah. And we gave them these names to go into the constituency, in the villages, in the towns, to throw out these names to come back and report to us who the suitable person could be. And to cut a long story short, when it came, the party saw that they’ve settled on Kwame Asumadu Solomon.”

And so we reported back to council. And council also gave us the go-ahead to engage further and to follow the due process to do a popular acclamation for Kwame Asumadu in the constituency. Today marks the official announcement of Kwame Asumadu as our candidate for the Akwatia constituency by-election,” he said.

Earlier, 3news sources indicated that Solomon Kwame Asumadu is a product of All Nations University and over 40 years of age.  Solomon is believed to have strong grassroots connections and a long-standing involvement in party affairs.

These qualities are said to have positioned him as a favorite among the aspirants who had expressed interest in contesting the NPP’s internal primaries.

The parliamentary seat became vacant following the passing of the sitting NPP Member of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Kumi, who spent six months in Parliament amidst court actions from the 2024 Parliamentary results that declared him winner.

Meanwhile, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is yet to elect its candidate for the by-election.

The party opened nominations on Monday, July 28,2025. Interested candidates are required to submit their filled forms on July 30 for the internal primary on August 4.
