In a determined effort to curb youth unemployment in the Mpohor municipality of the Western region, the Member of Parliament for the area, Henry Godfred Bentil, has donated 100 industrial sewing machines to newly trained tailors and seamstresses.

The donation, which coincided with the commemoration of 2025 UN World Youth Skills Day, formed part of the MP’s commitment to empowering the youth through vocational training and self-employment initiatives.

Speaking during the presentation ceremony, Mr. Bentil emphasized the urgent need to support young people with practical tools to start their own businesses.

“Many of our young people are ready to work but simply lack the means to begin. I made a promise to support our tailors and seamstresses, and today I am fulfilling that promise,” he said. “These machines are not just equipment – they are the foundation for livelihoods, economic independence, and a better future.”

He further explained that the gesture is part of a broader plan to reduce poverty and unemployment in the constituency.

“We cannot always wait for jobs to come to us. Sometimes, we must create our own. This is why we are investing in vocational skills and entrepreneurship,” he added.

The Municipal Chief Executive, Sophia Aubyn, also addressed the gathering, encouraging the beneficiaries to value their profession and remain committed to personal development.

“Tailoring and dressmaking are noble trades. Don’t look down on your skills. With dedication and innovation, you can build successful businesses right here in Mpohor,” she advised.

Madam Aubyn cautioned the youth against the growing desire to migrate in search of greener pastures, urging them instead to focus on acquiring employable skills and building local enterprises.

“The grass isn’t always greener elsewhere. Let’s build what we have here. With the right skills and support, our youth can thrive in their own communities,” she said.

The event also attracted the leadership of the Ghana Tailors and Dressmakers Association in the Western Region. The regional president lauded the MP’s intervention and called on the beneficiaries to make good use of the opportunity.

“This is a major boost for our profession. We thank the Honourable MP and urge the recipients to treat these machines as the beginning of their success stories,” he remarked.

The donation event was symbolic of the wider message behind World Youth Skills Day — a global observance that emphasizes the importance of equipping young people with skills for employment, decent work, and entrepreneurship.
