A Shipping container suspected to be filled with synthetic opioids has gone missing from the Tema Port.
One suspect, a freight forwarder associated with BJH logistics and Sabadaat S&D Enterprise has been arrested with two others said to be on the run.
The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has in the last few months embarked on surveillance at the ports following a BBC documentary highlighting the influx of synthetic opiods with Ghana described as a hotspot destination.
This close monitoring led NACOC officials to focus on a container said to have emanated from India on 26th March 2025. They therefore flagged the container and tagged it for further investigation. The container was then dispatched for scanning on 23rd May 2025 but has since not been sighted at the Tema Port.
A new probe led to the arrest of the said suspect who is alleged to have submitted the declaration in the E-customs system on behalf of Sabadaat S&D Enterprise.
Investigators say he admitted to acting as the declarant for the company and confirmed that he entered the consignment into the E-customs system. He also informed investigators that the bill of lading and invoice were handed to him by the two suspects said to be at large.
He has been slapped with the charge of importation of drugs and other products contrary to Section 122 of the Public Health Act, 2012 (ACT 851).
