The Western North Regional Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Michael Aidoo has said they were aware they were going to lose the Suaman Constituency seat in the 2024 election, but there was nothing they could do.
Mr. Aidoo, who is also the Council of State Member, said “the President won the election but we lost the seat”.
“We saw we were going to lose suaman seat because they (constituents) did not like the candidate,” he explained.
Mr. Aidoo made these revelations in an interview on Onua Maakye hosted by JB on Wednesday, July 30, 2025.
He said “we (regional executives) did all we could, but we lost but it is not a place that the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP can be on for another term”.
“I am sure the next election, it will come back to the NDC because we are working hard on recapturing the seat,” he stated.
The NDC occupies eight out of the nine constituencies in the Western North Region.
Touching on galamsey, he denied the notion that the Western North Region is the hub of illegal mining.
Mr. Michael Aidoo said things are changing when it comes to illegal mining ever since the National Democratic Congress (NDC) came to power.
“It’s not true that Western North is getting worse off when it comes to illegal mining. During the NPP time, it was clear on roadsides. It was clear but now, things are changing,” he stated.
Mr. Aidoo said “I am not saying illegal mining is not being done in Western North Region, but it is not worse”.
“It is getting better because the Lands and Natural Resources Minister is doing very well. The water is changing due to the measure that have been put in place”.
He explained that “under the NPP, it was scarry but now under the leadership of President John Mahama and Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, it is going down”.
