The African Union Commission has expressed condolences to Ghana after the tragic helicopter crash near Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
The crash claimed the lives of eight people, including Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, conveyed his heartfelt condolences to H.E. President John Dramani Mahama, the government, Ghanaians and the bereaved families of all those who lost their lives in this national tragedy.
He also expressed his solidarity with the Ghana Armed Forces and the ruling National Democratic Congress during this difficult moment.
H.E. Mr. Youssouf stated, “The African Union stands in full solidarity with Ghana in mourning this profound loss. May the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace.”
Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has ordered national flags to fly at half-mast after this tragedy.
At an emergency press briefing at the Presidency, Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah announced the death of these individuals and confirmed the incident.
The officials together with the crew members were en route Obuasi in the Ashanti Region for a national event.
The former Ashanti Regional Minister, Samuel Sarpong, who was also on board the helicopter lost his life.
Others who have been confirmed dead in the crash are Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, and Samuel Aboagye a former Member of Parliament and Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of NDC.
