The National Communications Authority (NCA) has suspended the operations of nine (9) radio stations for various infractions.

This action follows the expiration of the 30-day grace period granted by the President of the Republic of Ghana.

President John Dramani Mahama for defaulting stations to remedy the violation of the laws and regulations governing FM radio broadcasting in Ghana.

“Six (6) stations failed, refused and neglected to comply with the regulatory amnesty by taking no action. Consequently, the operations of the following stations have been suspended,” the NCA said in a statement dated August 12.

The operating licences of Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited in Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi have also been suspended for breaching broadcasting regulations.

According to an NCA statement, the suspension follows the expiration of a 30-day grace period granted by President John Dramani Mahama for defaulting stations to remedy violations of laws and regulations governing FM radio broadcasting in Ghana.

The regulator noted that while many violating stations took steps to address breaches during the amnesty period, Wontumi Multimedia failed to rectify certain infractions.

These included the unauthorised use of Studio-to-Transmitter Link (STL) frequencies and the operation of unapproved transmitter locations.

As a result, the NCA ordered the suspension of Wontumi Multimedia’s stations operating on:

  • 95.9 FM in Accra
  • 101.3 FM in Kumasi
  • 101.3 FM in Takoradi

The Authority stated that the stations were operating without a Certificate of Compliance, in violation of Regulation 54 of the Electronic Communications Regulations, 2011 (L.I. 1991).

The NCA reiterated its commitment to monitoring the broadcasting space to ensure compliance with relevant authorisation conditions, as well as the laws and regulations governing broadcasting in Ghana.
