Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, has asked politicians not to turn the procurement of a plane for the President and helicopters for the military into partisan politics.

He wants political actors to see such acquisitions as matters of national interest, rather than political convenience.

Otumfuo was speaking during a visit to the Manhyia Palace by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, following the helicopter crash that occurred last Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti region.

The crash claimed the lives of all eight persons on board, including two Cabinet Ministers in the persons of Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, and Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister of Environment, Science and Technology Innovation.

The Overlord of the Asante Kingdom expressed his deep sympathy to President Mahama and the bereaved families during the call, where he described the flight purchasing development as an issue of “national concern.”

He underscored the need for Ghana’s political leadership to treat aviation safety and security equipment procurement with the seriousness it deserves.

“Enough of the politicising of the purchase of presidential planes and helicopters. Human lives are at stake here. We must invest to safeguard their safety and efficiency,” the Asantehene said.

The Asantehene added that most of the military aircraft in use now are not in their best shape, underscoring the need for the country to invest in modern and reliable alternatives to enhance state security.

The Asantehene urged all sides of the political divide to unite in addressing the country’s aviation and security logistics challenges to prevent future tragedies.

Those who lost their lives in the crash were Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed (MP), Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Mr. Samuel Aboagye, Squadron Leader Peter Baafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah — all of whom, the House noted, served Ghana with distinction and dedication.

Aside from Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed and Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, who were buried on Sunday, August 10, the remaining victims will be laid to rest on Friday, August 15, 2025.
