The Ghana National Association of Farmers and Fishermen (GNAFF) has expressed discontent over what it describes as the “abusive words” used against its members by the General Secretary of the GRNMA, David Tenkorang Twum.

Tenkorang Twum, the General Secretary of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), allegedly derogated the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, and in the process, verbally attacked venerable farmers in an interview on an Accra-based radio station.

In a statement issued by GNAFF on Friday, August 22, 2025, it condemned Tenkorang Twum’s comments in strong terms, expressing disbelief that someone of his stature could stoop so low.

“GNAFF condemns in the strongest possible terms these unwarranted and disrespectful comments against farmers,” the statement contained.

“We are deeply shocked and dismayed that such abusive words could be uttered by a leader of a professional body, who should be expected to conduct himself with decorum and respect,” it added.

The statement, jointly signed by GNAFF’s General Secretary and President, Dr. Abutu Kapore and lawyer Michael Tetteh Kwetey, demanded that the GRNMA General Secretary retracts his comments and apologise to all farmers and fishers in the country within 24 hours, or face their wrath.

“GNAFF hereby serves notice to Dr. David Tenkorang Twum to, within 24 hours, retract his unfortunate remarks and render an unqualified apology to all farmers and fishermen across Ghana.

“Anything short of this will compel GNAFF to consider the appropriate steps necessary to defend the dignity and integrity of our hardworking members,” the statement added.

The brouhaha stems from a recent incident at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, where a nurse was allegedly assaulted over a supposed case of medical negligence.

A social activist, popularly known as Ralph, recorded a video at the facility and shared it on social media, showing friends who had been involved in an accident lying in the emergency ward for several minutes without allegedly receiving attention.

During an altercation with the hospital staff, Ralph was seen hitting the hand of a nurse who had responded to his complaints.

Subsequent videos on social media showed the nurse lying on a bed with bandages on both hands, a development that the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) took seriously.

The GRNMA gave the government an ultimatum to arrest Ralph, who was also seen in a video on social media shaking hands with the Minister of Health, Mr. Akandoh, who had visited the scene to seek a resolution to the matter.

In what many have described as a political twist to the matter, the GRNMA accused the Minister of condoning Ralph’s act merely by shaking hands with him and whispering into the Minister’s ear upon his arrival at the facility.

These insinuations led to Tenkorang Twum’s distasteful comments against the Minister, which also involved farmers.

Meanwhile, a committee has been constituted to investigate the matter and bring it to a finality.
