Ghana Women’s Premier League champions Police Ladies FC have arrived in Yamoussoukro in neighbouring La Cote d’Ivoire for the 2025 WAFU Zone B qualifying championship for the 2025 CAF Women’s Champions League.
The team arrived Friday night after departing Ghana on Thursday.
Led by Coach Yusif Basigi, the team held a first training session in Yamoussoukro ahead of the opening Group B clash against former champions Bayelsa Queens at the the Charles Konan Banny Stadium on Sunday.
At the pre-match press conference on Saturday, Coach Basigi says his experience in such international competitions will come to bear despite the tournament being a debut campaign for his team.
“I won African Games with the Black Queens, I won African Games with the Black Princesses, the U-20 side. That tells you that we have our way out when it comes to such competitions,” he told the press.
The former Hasaacas Ladies coach said he has had discussions with his technical team and they have resolved to ensure that POLAS, as his team is affectionately called, make it to the CAF Women’s Champions League.
“So once I am not new to this terrain, I think that I have already discussed that with my Technical Team and we are working so hard to also make sure that this one too becomes reality and fruition so that we crown it all by advancing to the Champions League.”
His opposite number for Sunday’s clash, Busari Hakeem Ishola, kept his strategy close to his chest and said he will not give his “arsenal” out.
“For the game, it has gone scientific and for us, we will not use this platform to disclose our arsenal,” he told the press when asked about his formation into the game.
He admitted, however, that Coach Basigi has the experience.
Nonetheless, he stressed once it is “women for women”, he is hopeful his side will emerge triumphant on Sunday.
Kick-off is at 3:00pm local time.
