Security Expert, Dr. Ishmael Norman has called on the New Juaben South MP, Michael Okyere Baafi to resign from his position in fulfillment of his pledge.

The MP had earlier made a pledge to resign from his post if the NPP loses the Akwatia by-election.

“If NPP loses this Akwatia by-election, I will resign as MP, mark my words,” he is quoted to have said in an interview on August 31, 2025.

Speaking in an interview on TV3’s coverage of the Akwatia by-election on September 2, Dr. Norman noted that if Okyere Baafi does not resign, the NPP must kick him out.

Although the EC has not yet made official declaration of the results, results trickling in so far and ones that have been collated indicates that the NDC candidate, Bernard Bediako takes the lead.

“I want to see honourable Baafi resign because he made this announcement. I wish there was a way that constituencies can have a vote of no confidence.

“Seriously, who compelled him to make that statement that if NPP doesn’t win, he will resign. NPP would not so he should otherwise the party should kick him out,” he stated.

Dr. Norman argued that the New Juaben South MP must honour his statement and failure to do so smacks of lack of credibility within the NPP.

“It goes to the fact that there’s no credibility within NPP as it is now,” he added.

He stressed that: “I believe that the NPP structure has collapsed. They are trying to build it up top-down and it doesn’t work that way. So, for me, I think it is one of those things that the party does that they have to move away from.”

The by-election was necessitated by the death of the area’s lawmaker, Ernest Yaw Kumi. Voting closed at 5pm, sorting and counting has been done with results collation ongoing as of the time of publication of this story.
